Mit einfachen Mitteln einen Pavillon zu bauen, der Platz für ca. 60 Personen bietet, war das Ziel des Projektes. Entstanden ist der Bau als begehbare Skulptur anlässlich der Präsentation „finale“ an der Villa Massimo in Rom. der Pavillon, komplett aus preiswerten und recycelbaren Materialien gebaut, kann innerhalb weniger Stunden auf- und abgebaut werden. An einer Plattform aus Holzbalken werden Flacheisen 30 x 10mm befestigt. Jeweils 2 gegenüberliegende 6m Stangen werden nach innen gebogen und mit Schellen verbunden. Durch die flexible Verbindung kann die Form des Pavillons bestimmt werden. Die Form erinnert an einen aufliegenden Tropfen oder eine Blase. Die 5 Bögen werden an ihren Kreuzungspunkten miteinander verbunden, wodurch die Konstruktion ihre Stabilität erhält. Das sich so ergebende Skelett wird mit einer dehnbaren Kunststoffolie, wie sie zur Verpackung in der Industrie verwendet wird, umwickelt. Diese Hülle ist Witterungsschutz und zugleich eine weitere Versteifung der Konstruktion. die vielen Schichten der Folie ergeben ein lebendiges Bild der Hülle, die je nach Licht und Blickwinkel sehr verschieden wirkt. Der Ausbau des Pavillons, der Boden, sowie eine Sitzbank erfolgte mit 3-Schichtplatten.
Frei Otto: “Das sieht beinahe aus wie ein Tropfen. Die Form kommt heraus, wenn man eine Folie mit Wasser füllt, ein aufliegender Tropfen.”
Der komplette Pavillon wurde in Rom demontiert, nach Berlin gebracht und dort im Museum “Gropius-Bau” wieder aufgebaut.
The aim of the project was to use simple means to build a pavilion that could accommodate around 60 people. The building was created as a walk-in sculpture on the occasion of the “finale” presentation at the Villa Massimo in Rome. The pavilion, built entirely from inexpensive and recyclable materials, can be assembled and dismantled within a few hours. Flat irons 30 x 10mm are attached to a platform made of wooden beams. Two opposing 6m poles are bent inwards and connected with clamps. The flexible connection allows the shape of the pavilion to be determined. The shape is reminiscent of a drop or bubble. The 5 arches are connected to each other at their intersections, which gives the construction its stability. The resulting skeleton is wrapped with a stretchy plastic film, such as that used for packaging in industry. This cover provides weather protection and at the same time further stiffens the construction. The many layers of the film create a vivid image of the cover, which appears very different depending on the light and viewing angle. The expansion of the pavilion, the floor and a bench were made with 3-layer panels.
Frei Otto: “It almost looks like a drop. The shape comes out when you fill a foil with water, a drop lying on it.”
The entire pavilion was dismantled in Rome, brought to Berlin and rebuilt there in the “Gropius-Bau” museum.
